Other people's problems

A man is out hiking a dangerous and unfamiliar trail when he gets caught in a terrible storm. In the chaos of it, he misses a step and tumbled thousands of feet down the mountain’s face. It is a fall that should surely kill anyone, and yet – somehow – he stands and walks away with no more than a scratch.

The same day, in another place, a different man is walking the simple trail by his house that he walks every day. The weather is clear, and he’s equally calm of mind when he suddenly trips on a pebble. It is a tiny stumble from which anyone should easily regain his step, and yet – somehow – he hits his head and twists his spine, and ends up paralyzed from the neck down.

Of the two men, to whom do you extend your compassion?
